We're kicking off this HOT summer with a set of singles by some new collaborators. It's such a treat to discover so much great music, and we're looking forward to sharing a selection of tracks that have caught our attention. First up is 'Sarah' by Melbourne based pianist/composer Jake Lowe & 'Blocks' by Missoula (MT) based composer/musician Maxy Dutcher.
We were at Ólafur Arnalds' studio last month to shoot this lovely session with Snorri Hallgrímsson
'I Know You'll Follow' appears on Hallgrímsson's debut LP 'Orbit' out 15th of March
Icelandic composer/producer Snorri Hallgrímsson's debut album 'Orbit' will drop on June 15 and is now available for pre-order on CD/Digital from our Bandcamp store.
Recorded primarily at Ólafur Arnalds’s studio in Reykjavík, the album sees Hallgrímsson expanding his classical background with elements from electronica, choral traditions, and film music. The result is a stunning blend of haunting strings, distorted beats, intimate pianos, and the composer’s own ethereal voice. The album features strings performed by the Budapest Art Orchestra and engineering/mixing by Addi 800 (Björk, Sigur Rós).
Piano Day is always a special one for us, as we are fortunate to collaborate with so many creative pianists. On this 88th day of the year, we have a special in-studio video of Daigo Hanada performing his piece 'Futari'.
The track is part of our intimate / minimal piano-based compilation 'Intervals', which is out today! Big thanks to each of the pianists / composers who made this such a special collection of music - Ed Carlsen, Manos Milonakis, Sebastian Morawietz, Sten Erland Hermundstad, Jacob David, James Maloney, Snorri Hallgrímsson and Daigo Hanada. Happy piano day!
Spring is on its way and so is Piano Day!
This year we've put together Intervals, a collection of stripped down / intimate tracks with a minimalist bent to go along with the breezy season to come...
'Intervals' features six previously unreleased compositions from our roster and two by special guests. Discover an improvisation by Daigo Hanada, b-sides from Ed Carlsen's 'Elusive Frames' & James Maloney's 'Gaslight', a never-before-heard piece by Jacob David (recorded before his album 'Omkuld'), a second sneak peek of Snorri Hallgrímsson’s upcoming debut album, an exploration for acoustic and wurlitzer piano by Manos Milonakis, a miniature by Sten Erland Hermundstad and a nocturne by Sebastian Morawietz.
It's holiday time & we're very pleased to welcome Icelandic composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Snorri Hallgrímsson to the Moderna Records family. He is a long-time collaborator of composer Ólafur Arnalds, and has worked with him on various projects, including 'Island Songs', 'The Chopin Project', and the BAFTA-winning score for 'Broadchurch'.
Snorri Hallgrímsson's genre-bending upcoming debut album was mainly recorded in Arnalds’ studio in Reykjavík and and will drop 16th of March 2018, with the first single 'Homeless' out now.

Brand new track from Feather Beds's upcoming LP Blooming is premiering today over at GoldFlakePaint
"the four-minutes of ‘Play Dead’ unravel with an ingrained sense of composure and balance, bringing to mind Peter Broderick in his more refined moments, able to blur genre lines until all your left with is a standalone piece of distinct and exceptional music in its own right."

We're very pleased to announce the signing of London-based composer, producer and pianist James Maloney. Moderna will release his debut full-length album Gaslight on July 7th - and we're sure it'll make the perfect accompaniment to your summer days!
:: 1st single + CD/Digital pre-order will be up next week ::
James studied music at Oxford University and after graduating in 2011, found his own voice in minimalist composition and songwriting, which led him to the sounds and style present on Gaslight. The album is a vibrant debut effort that is built around an old piano, accompanied by trumpet, vibraphone, glockenspiel & subtle electronics...
This Thursday May 11th, we're putting on a great evening of modern classical / ambient / instrumental music right here in Montreal with friends, collaborators and Moderna artists. If you're in town, be sure to join us at Casa del Popolo to catch some music by Ed Carlsen, Fredrik Gran, Justin Wright and some very special guests. Very special mention to the inimitable Montreal-based Quasar quatuor de saxophones who will join us to perform music by Fredrik Gran.
Happy to announce the newest member of the Moderna family: Dublin-based composer / songwriter Feather Beds (aka Michael Orange). We'll be releasing his second LP "Blooming" this September, and it'll be our first catalogue entry featuring vocals! Head over here to give the album track 'Play Dead' a listen !
